The first version, in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Begun in December 1888, it still lacked finished hands when Van Gogh was hospitalised; he resumed it on 21 January 1889 and completed it on the 23rd. Orange-red dots crowd the blue-green wallpaper and white flowers surround the sitter; La Berceuse is written on the red floor at lower right, and the chair arm carries no signature.
