Cuesmes
Cuesmes is the ground before the painter emerges: mining country, poverty, religious impulse and bodily labour form the depths of his later visual ethics. Huts, the baker’s and miner’s lodgings, and at least one descent into Marcasse make this place harder than a mere “mining district” label.

Borinage 1879
In the Borinage his post ended, and the surviving letters fall silent. By October 1880 he had moved to Brussels to study drawing. What happened in between, we cannot fully reconstruct.
