When the Storm Became Material

While painting the sea, the wind made it hard for him to stand; sand covered one picture from the same outing.

Painting

F4 is not the seascape that had to be scraped down and repainted under pressure from wind and sand — that work can no longer be identified. It is one surviving view from the same Scheveningen excursion. This distinction matters: the picture need not stand in for the storm. It keeps only what it can say for itself: a low sea, a paper support, and paint put down quickly.
The technical record makes that action more concrete. It was originally painted on paper, whose edges were later cropped; the ground is thin; paint was used straight from the tube, with brushes ranging from very narrow to very broad. There is no recipe here for a “storm effect”, only a way of continuing to make a picture under unstable conditions.

Letter

On 26 August 1882 he wrote to Theo about his week in Scheveningen: wind, rain and sea, revisited again and again, ending in two small seascapes. One already had much sand in it; the other, made in the real storm, was covered by a thick layer. He scraped it off twice, worked again in a small inn behind the dunes, then went back out to look at the sea.
The letter’s annotation distinguishes F4 from that now-lost “real storm” picture. This page therefore does not attach the scraping or the sand to F4. They belong to the conditions of one working excursion, not to a separately provable history for this canvas.
