Pickers work among the olive trees with a ladder; the trunks twist, the foliage is grey-green, the ground alternates tawny and dark violet, and the sky is pale. The editors of the letters identify this as the first of the three Women Picking Olives, painted on the spot. In January 1890 Van Gogh called this study from nature “more coloured with more solemn tones.”
