Inside a weaver’s cottage in Nuenen. A section of the loom fills the foreground; the weaver sits behind its wooden frame, head bent over the threads. On the right the window stands open onto the bright field outside — a figure stooping at work, and beyond it the old tower of Nuenen. In early July 1884 Van Gogh described the canvas to Theo as “a section of the loom with the figure and a little window.” Six months earlier he had written that weavers are hard to draw “because in the small rooms one can’t get far enough away to draw the loom.”
