Nieuw-Amsterdam

Nieuw-Amsterdam, in Drenthe, is a village at the end of a canal where he painted three peat-country canvases in the autumn of 1883. The remoteness here is measurable: his letters went first to Hoogeveen and back out again, and the money arrived later each time.
