Painting

Mas de Saintes-Maries, Boats at Saintes-Maries — painted after his week-long trip to the Mediterranean coast in late June 1888. Beach, fishing boats, the Mediterranean. But the way he painted them came directly from Japanese prints — asymmetric composition, flattened colour blocks, treatment of empty space. Loti's novel Pêcheur d'Islande gave him the linguistic foundation for describing fishermen and the sea; Japanese prints gave him the visual language.

Letter

July 1888, Arles. He wrote: "Loti taught me to see Japan in the Mediterranean." This sentence is the essence of the translator talent: Loti as mediator. Loti's novels were not the object of translation, but a bridge in the process. French literature (Loti) → visual method (Japan) → oil practice (Provence) — three translation chains running through his hand.

Place

Arles + Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. He went to the coast for a week at the end of June. The colour of the Mediterranean made him think of the sea in Japanese prints. After returning, his paintings used Provençal subjects, Loti's linguistic rhythm, and Japanese print composition simultaneously. Three geographies layered in a single painting.
