Onder de teekening heb ik geschreven: Hoe kan het dat er op aarde een vrouw alleen is — verlaten — een woord van Michelet. Beneath the drawing I have written: How can it be that there is on earth a woman alone — abandoned — a word from Michelet.
Michelet's woorden zijn als een teekening — zij maken het onzichtbare zichtbaar. Michelet's words are like a drawing — they make the invisible visible.
Ik heb die woorden onder de teekening gezet omdat het beeld alleen niet genoeg zegt. I put those words beneath the drawing because the image alone does not say enough.
Sien is voor mij wat Michelet beschrijft — de verlaten vrouw. Sien is for me what Michelet describes — the abandoned woman.
Een boek en een teekening kunnen hetzelfde zeggen — als men het goed doet. A book and a drawing can say the same thing — if one does it well.
