Letter

May 1882, The Hague. He wrote: "Beneath the drawing I have written — how can it be that there is on earth a woman alone — abandoned — a word from Michelet." The sentence from Michelet was written into the picture itself. Text became part of the work, not decoration, not an after-the-fact explanation.

The Translator

The ferocious reader read Michelet's sentence into his own mind; the translator translated that sentence into a line on the picture. Two text talents completed the most direct output on the surface of one drawing — what was read, what was translated, what was drawn, three things coming into one on the same surface. The cleanest fusion of his text talent and visual talent in his life.

Synaesthetic Precision

The woman's ribs are countable — synaesthetic precision turned abstract words like "poverty," "loneliness," "abandoned" into ribs that can be counted. But deeper still: Michelet's French sentence written on a Dutch artist's drawing, the materiality of the text itself becoming part of the density of the image. The widest operation of synaesthetic precision — turning an abstract proposition into a visible material weight.
