The Yellow House
The imagination he spent on the Yellow House lasted far longer than the house itself.
-
F464 The Yellow House (The Street) 1888
He had lived alone in Arles for several months, painting a great deal, and also wondering: what would it be like if other painters were here too?
The Yellow House was the studio he rented, and he spent months adding to it piece by piece. In his letters he described it as a "studio of the South," the prototype of a community — not merely a place where he himself lived.
Gauguin came in October and left two months later. After that he gave the Yellow House up. It really existed for only about four months, but the time he spent preparing for it was far longer.

From the Letters
The house to the left is pink with green shutters, the one shaded by the tree. That's the restaurant where I go to dinner every day. My friend the postman lives at the end of the street on the left.
The house and its surroundings under a sulphur sky, of a brilliant lemon yellow. It's a hard subject — these yellow houses in the sun and then the incomparable freshness of the blue.
I still have the idea of founding a studio in the south.
